Honour-Based Violence (HBV) is a form of abuse. It is committed to protect or defend the perceived ‘honour’ of a family or community. This can involve a range of harmful behaviours, including:
Physical Abuse: Hitting, beating, or other forms of physical violence.
Sexual Abuse: Rape, sexual assault, or forcing someone into unwanted sexual acts.
Psychological Abuse: Threats, intimidation, and emotional manipulation to control someone’s behavior.
Domestic Abuse: Abuse within a family, including physical, sexual, psychological, emotional, or financial harm.
Forced Marriage: Pressuring someone to marry against their will.
Isolation: Restricting someone’s freedom of movement, communication, or access to resources like phones or passports.
Threats and Intimidation: Making threats to harm someone or their loved ones.
HBV often occurs because the victim is perceived to have brought ‘shame’ or ‘dishonor’ to their family or community. This is due to actions like choosing a partner outside their community. It also occurs due to refusing a forced marriage. Lastly, dressing in ways that are deemed inappropriate can be a cause.
It’s crucial to recognize the signs of HBV and seek help if you or someone you know is experiencing it. Support organisations and legal authorities can offer assistance and protection.
