Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is a shared responsibility. A child is anyone under the age of 18. Every person who comes into contact with children, young people, or their families has a part to play. To fulfil this responsibility well, all practitioners must take a child‑centred approach — always considering what is in the best interests of the child.
No single practitioner will ever hold the complete picture of a child’s life. To ensure children and families receive the right support at the right time, everyone involved must stay alert to concerns, share information appropriately, and take timely action.
For the purposes of this guidance, safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children includes:
- offering help and support as soon as needs or problems begin to emerge
- protecting children from maltreatment, whether inside or outside the home, including online
- preventing the impairment of children’s physical and mental health or development
- ensuring children grow up in safe, nurturing environments that provide effective care
- taking action that enables all children to achieve the best possible outcomes.
Safeguarding means keeping every child safe, protected and supported.
